Abstract

27,625. Thompson, W. P., [Puff, J.]. Nov. 24. Driving-mechanism; clutches.-Relates to means for disconnecting the driving-mechanism and wheels of bicycles and the like. The rear-wheel hub C, Fig. 1, has cast on it a flange C' having a bevelled cage C<11>, on which is mounted a ring B having a gap at K, Fig. 2. The ring B is caused to always rotate with the hub flange C' by means of a pin engaging a socket. The chain-wheel F is secured to a ring A mounted on ball bearings L on the hub C and fitting over the ring B as shown. A spring D, Fig. 2, actuated by turning the oval piece E, presses apart the open ends of the ring B, causing it to clamp the ring A to the hub C, and establish a driving connection with the chain-wheel F. The oval E is turned by a rod 0 having projections Q, Q', adapted to engage levers R, R' respectively. The latter are connected to the handle-bar by any suitable arrangement by which either can be put in engagement with the projections Q, Q<1>, thereby turning the oval into either position.
