5836. Hancock, T. C. March 16. Brakes. - Relates to a free-wheel clutch and back-pedalling brake for bicycles &c. The hub a of the back wheel is screwed to receive a brake diskj formed with recesses l, which are engaged by pawls or rollers o carried on the inside of the chainwheel m. A boss p on the chain-wheel is formed with teeth r engaged by spring pawls t carried by a ring s, which is held in position by a cap v. The ring s is formed with an arm s<1> having a pin and slot connexion w<1> with a lever w, which is pivoted at w<2> to a clip x secured to the bottom stay f. A brake-band z surrounding the disk j is adjustably secured at one end to the lever wand at the other end to one of the bolts y' of the clip x. When the chain-wheel m is driven, the drive is transmitted to the wheel e through the clutch o. l, the teeth r moving freely over the pawls t. By holding the chain-wheel m stationary, the wheel e is caused to run as a free-wheel, and by back-pedalling, the teeth r are made to engage the pawls t and partially rotate the ring s, thereby tightening the band z on the diskj.
