Abstract

18,315. Baron, F. Aug. 13. Brakes; driving-mechanism.-In a variable-speed gear for cycles and the like, of the kind employing a secondary shaft 12 carrying spur-wheels 14, 15 adapted to gear with wheels 10, 4 upon the crank axle, the wheel 10, splined to the crank-axle is connected to the wheel 4 and the chain-wheel by clutch teeth 11, while the secondary shaft 12 is mounted by eccentric journals 16, 17 within stationary bearing-parts 18, 19 in such a manner that the operation of a lever 25 effects the longitudinal motion of the shaft, sleeve 13, and wheel 10 to disengage the parts 10, 4, and also brings wheels 15, 4 and 14, 10 into gear. A part 28, Fig. 2, upon the crank or crank-axle is connected to a concentric part 29 by a ratchet device, so that by means of a cord 30 backpedalling applies a drum brake to the hub of the rear wheel of the machine. The longitudinal motion of the shaft 12 is caused by the engagement of helicoidal surfaces 21, 22 upon the bearing 18 with correspondingly-faced rings 23, 24 upon the axle 16. In the intermediate position of the lever 25, the teeth 11 are disengaged and the wheels 14, 10, 15, 4 are not in gear.
