Abstract

2884. Smith, W. Feb. 9. Driving-mechanism; brakes; clutches.-Relates to driving-clutches and back-pedalling brakes, arranged to give a free wheel. The clutches are formed with spring gripping-discs, eccentrics, or cams. Figs. 1 and 2 show one arrangement applied to the driving-wheel hub. The chainwheel or pulley C is recessed to receive two sets of clutch pieces M, L, the former serving to lock the wheel to the hub A, Z during forward pedalling, and the latter being arranged sideways so as to act during back-pedalling to force discs H, F with interposed brake surfaces E outwards against a fixed casing D. The driving-clutch may be used without the brake-actuating clutch. The brake discs may be made of larger diameter than those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the chain-wheel being supported by lateral ball bearings, or the brake discs &c. may be arranged on the inner side of the chain-wheel. Instead of using clutch pieces disposed as shown, the two sets may be arranged to act respectively within and outside a flange or projection on the chain-wheel. The brake may be arranged inside the hub, so as to force together discs fixed to the hub and to a fixed sleeve. Or the clutch may act to expand a split or segmental band against the interior of the hub or against a flange thereon. Special forms of clutch pieces with rounded or angular ends, fitted with balls jointed, or mounted on eccentric axes, may be used. The details of construction and the relative arrangement of the parts may be varied.
