GEORGE I-I. HAMMOND, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
COASTER AND BRAKE FOR BICYGLES.
SlEClFICATlON forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,962, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed August 6, 1901. Serial No. 71,019. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE H. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coasters and Brakes for Bicycles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has for its object to provide an improved back-pedaling brake and coaster for bicycles; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like part-s throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view principally in horizontal section, showing portions of the frame of a bicycle and the hub of the rear wheel equipped with one of my improved back pedaling brakes and coasters. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View in detail, showing the so-called screwsleeve of the driving sprocket or member. Fig. et is a plan view showingr in detail the non-rotary half-clutch. Fig. 5 is a plan view with parts broken away, showing the shii'table double half-clutch or sleeve with frictionclutch cone; and Fig. 6 is a plan view showing in detail the half-clutch member of the wheel-hub.
The numeral 1 indicates the rear tubes of the bicycle-frame, which are united at their rear ends in the ordinary way by prong bearing-forks 2. A non-rotary spindle 3 is anchored to the bearing-forksv2, as shown, by bearing-cones 4 and 5 and coperating nuts 6. Bearing-cone l is made adjustable by screwthreaded engagement with the said spindle, and the bearing-cone 5 is screwed against a shoulder afforded, as shown, by a squared portion 7 of said spindle. To further secure the cone 5 against rotation, it is provided with a projecting arm'S, the free end of which is secured to one of the frame-tubes by a clamp 9.
The wheel-hub l() is formed with an internal tapered or conical bearing-surface 11, and at one end it is provided with an internal annular ball-bearing 12, between which and the cone 5 bearing-balls 13 are mounted to run. At its other end the hub lO is provided with an internal annular` ball-bearing 14, between which and an intermediate cone, presently to be noted, bearing-balls 15 are mounted to run. The annular bearing 14 is provided with a half-clutch 16.
A screw-sleeve 17 is loosely mounted on the spindle 3. This sleeve 17 is formed with the spiral groove 1S and at its outer end is provided with a bearing-cone 19, which coperates with the bearing la and the balls 15, as previously indicated. Said cone 19 is formed at its outer end with an internal ball-runway 20, between which and the bearing-cone 4 bearing-balls 21 are mounted to run. The driving member, which in this illustration is in the form of a sprocket-wheel 22, is rigidly secured on the outwardly-projecting end of the cone portion 19 of the said sleeve 17.
A shiftable sleeve 23 is mounted on the sleeve 17 and is provided with a spiral key 24, which works in the spiral groove 18 of said sleeve 17. At one end the shift/able sleeve 23 is provided with a half-clutch 25, which cooperates with a half-clutch 16 of the hnb 10. At its other end said sleeve 23 is provided with a half-clutch 26, which cooperates with a half-clutch 27on the spindle. This clutch 27 is held against rotation, as shown, by the engagement therewith of a squared section 28 of the spindle 3. The said half-clutch 27 is yieldingly pressed by a spring 29 on the spindle 3 against a stopshoulder 30, formed on said spindle.
For cooperation with the conical internal frictional bearing-surface 1l of the hub 10 the sleeve 23 is provided with a frietional-clutch cone 31. This clutch-cone 31 is preferably made of wood fiber and, as shown, is secured on the said sleeve 23 by screw-threaded engagement therewith. l
The length of the shiftable sleeve 23 is such that when its half-clutch 25 engages with the half-clutch 16 of the wheel-hub its half-clutch 26 will be held out of engagement with the nonrotary half-clutch 27. The converse is also true. Thns it will be seen that the sliding clutch-cone 3l is provided with what might be designated as a double half-clutch, which adapts it to be connected with the hub halfclutch 16 in the one instance and with the non-rotary or anchored halfclutch 27 in the other instance. Its half-clutch 26 is adapted to be engaged with said non-rotary half-clutch 27,'while the said clutch-cone 31 is pressed into engagement with the conical frictionbearing 11 of the wheel-hub. With the said bearing member 31 made of wood fiber it will of course wear away much more rapidly than if made of metal and as it wears away will require to be driven or moved farther toward the left. The spring 29 permits the halfclutch 27 to yield or move toward the left, so that the said clutch-cone 31 may always make proper engagement with its cooperating bearing-surface 11.
Under the forward pedaling action the sprocket 22 will of course be driven in the direction indicated by the arrow marked on Fig. 2. This movement of the sprocket and its spirally-grooved sleeve 17 will move the shiftable sleeve 23 toward the right and cause its half-clutch 25 to engage the half-clutch 16 of the hub, and thereby positively drive the traction-wheel.
When the sprocket 22 is turned backward by a back-pedaling action, the half-clutch 25 will'be disengaged from the half-clutch 16, so that the traction-wheel is permitted to run ahead, and the clutch 26 will be engaged with the non-rotary half-clutch 27, so that the sleeve 23 and its cone 31 will be held against rotation, while said cone will be pressed into engagement with the friction-surface 11 of the hub 10 under a force dependingon the power which is exerted in the back-pedaling action. In coasting, the pedals, and consequently the sprocket 22, are simply held stationary, but are not turned backward, as in the brake-setting action.
It is of course evident that when the friction-clutch cone 31 becomes too badly worn it may be removed and another substituted therefor. The device above described is reliable and positive in all of its actions and has no parts which are liable to get out of order. It will be further understood that the device described is capable of many modifications within the scope of my invention. For instance, the driving member instead of being in the form of a sprocket might be in the form of a gear, as would be the case when the device is applied to the so-called chainless or geared bicycle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. The combination with a wheel-hub having a half-clutch, of a non-rotary half-clutch,
a friction-clutch member engageable with the wheel-hub and provided with half-clutches adapting it to be alternately connected with said non-rotary half-clutch and with the halfclutch of said hub, and a driving member operating on said friction -clutch member to throw the same into and out of action and to connect its half-clutches with the said coperating clutches, vsubstantially as described.
