Abstract

19,466. Hõrtel, M. Sept. 9. Driving - mechanism. - In a high-speed driving- gear for bicycles, motor cycles, &c., the rear wheel is driven through an intermediate axle, while, to effect a disconnection with the driving-wheel, and in order that the rider may have both his feet in similar positions during free-wheeling, one crank is mounted upon a screw thread. Thus, during driving, arms k upon the loose crank i engage the ratchet recesses of a chain-disc l, so that the wheel axle is driven through chain-wheels d, e, h. If the loose crank be then stopped, the continued rotation of the chain-disc will cause this crank to travel outwards against the action of a spring q. The clutch is thus disengaged, and the pitch of the screw threads is so adjusted that this disengagement occurs after half a revolution of the other crank. The rider then has both feet in similar positions, and the wheel runs free. When pressure upon the loose pedal is relieved, the spring returns the parts to normal position.
