Abstract

5207. Salwey, E. R., and Salwey Free Wheel Gear Co. March 19. Clutches; ratchet gearing.-Relates to clutches of the type described in Specification No. 871, A.D. 1898, applicable for bicycles &c. The chain ring a has secured to it side plates c, d, and fits over the ring b, which is screwed on the hub of the bicycle driving-wheel. In a recess in the ring a, is pivoted a dog j, having at one end a projection pressed inwards by a spring and adapted to engage in one of a series of recesses h in the ring b. A pin o at the opposite end of the dog projects, through a slot in the plate d, into a grooved drum v. When this pin is pressed inwards, the opposite end of the dog moves outwards, and the chain ring is disconnected. It is stated, however, that the action may be in the opposite sense, i.e., that the parts may be connected by pressing inwards the pin o. The pin may be controlled by a wire loop, by a spring ring, or by a pair of rings pivoted together side by side and each formed with a lug for connection to a yoke, so that they may be turned into eccentric positions ; the pin may be fitted with a curved shoe. The device is controlled by a lever on the handle-bar of the machine and flexible connections such as described in Specifications No. 25,325, A.D. 1896, and No. 1196, A.D. 1898 [Abridgment Class Velocipedes].
