Abstract

6062. Smith, W., and Gay, R. March 12. driving-mechanism; clutches; brakes. -Relates to driving, coasting, and back-pedalling or brake mechanism. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, one or more blocks F, formed at one end with a tooth f<2> to engage a rough surface d' formed in the hub flange D and carrying a brake block f<3> at the other end to engage a smoother surface d<2> in the flange D, is or are pivoted on pins G carried by rings E loosely mounted on the axles A and prevented from rotating backwards by a pawl e' engaging ratchet teeth a<1> formed on the axle. The block F is actuated so as to move either or neither end f<2>, f<3> into engagement by a cam or eccentric H secured to the chain-wheel, which is loosely mounted on the axle or hub. In a modifi- cation, shown in Fig. 12, the block F is replaced by a ring formed with a toothed lug f<2> and a brake surface f<3>, pivoted at G to a ring E formed with clutch teeth to engage a spring catch e<3> carried in the axle, and actuated by a pin H<2> on the chain - wheel. In another form, shown in Fig. 18, a ring I, loosely mounted on an eccentric portion H<3> of the chain-wheel, is formed with a weight i<2>, which, when coasting, hangs down loosely, as shown, but is forced against and grips the hub flange D by rotation in either direction of the chain-wheel.
