Abstract

6404. Loog, H., and Gubbins, R. R. April 5. Clutches; brakes.-Fig. 1 ehows a free-wheel clutch for bicycles and similar vehicles with backpedalling brake. The clutch box C forms part of, or is attached to, the hub A, and engages with a pawl E with pins within the recess D. The pawl E is pivoted to the sprocket-wheel K, or its casing, and, when the sprocket-wheel is not running, it is removed from the clutch box to enable the wheel to run free. The balls M ride in inclined grooves L, which are shallow at one end, and cause the sprocket-wheel or its casing to join against the friction ring P, to ensure contact for driving the wheel, when the motion is reversed and the balls ride up the grooves. In a modified form of clutch, back-pedalling is ensured by a friction grip on flat face of the clutch box. In this, the clutch box forms the sprocket-wheel, and a ring for engagement with the pawl is carried on the hub. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, back-pedaliing is ensured by pins Y engaging with the friction ring X, which is adjustable by screw to compensate for wear.
