12,687. Haythorn, J., and Nisbet, J. R. June 17. Clutches.-Relates to free-wheel clutches for bicycles &c. arranged to allow forward or backpedalling and sometimes constructed to actuate a brake. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the driving-wheel hub a carries a drum enclosing a loose split ring c, which is expanded by a tilting- pawl d when the chain-wheel is driven in either direction. The pawl is pivoted as the split part of the ring, and its end e engages a recess f in the boss g of the chain-wheel h. The chain-wheel runs free on the axle or hub, and may be mounted on ball-bearings. Each end of the split ring may carry a pawl engaging a recess in the hub of the chain-wheel. In a modification, the boss g is provided with inclines, which act on projections on the boss j of the split ring, so that back-pedalling forces a brake surface carried by the ring against the face of the drum. In another arrangement, the pawl d carries a projection working in a slotted piece carried by the hub. This piece can be turned by a key, so as to lock the pawl, thus rendering the clutch inoperative.
