Abstract

25,632. Gobiet, J. L. J. Dec. 9. Variable-speed gearing; clutches.-In a two-speed driving-attachment for the ordinary, coaster, or variable-speed hubs of cycles and the like, a controlling-plate h, maintained in position by ball bearings h<2>, h<3>, is eccentrically recessed to form a bearing for a ring g, the teeth g<1> of which pass through a slot i<1> in the plate into engagement with internal teeth e within the sprocket-wheel, while the teeth on the opposite side of the ring are in gear with teeth f upon a ring d screwed upon the hub. The controlling-plate h has ratchet teeth m adapted to be engaged by a nose n<6> upon a pawl n mounted upon a stationary arm n<2>, the pawl being pressed into operative position by a spring o and withdrawn by a rod n<3>. Thus when the plate is locked, the eccentric ring g revolves therein and the hub is driven at an increased speed through the teeth e, g<1>, f. If, however, the plate is set free, the mechanism becomes locked and revolves as one piece, the hub being driven through a oneway clutch c'. By applying the attachment to the driving-element of hubs having two or three speed mechanism within the shell, four or five speeds may be obtained, and in this case, by means of a cam the rod that operates the pawl may be made to act in sequence with the operating-rod of the hub gear so as to allow the gears to come into action alternately. According to the Provisional Specification, the pivot of the pawl is mounted in an inclined slot and is retained therein by a spring.
