Abstract
189,108. Schneider, Dr. Ing. & C. A. Nov. 14, 1921, [Convention date]. Dust, excluding; oil, retaining.- A dust-excluding ring 11, Fig. 1, furnished with a felt washer 12, and an oil-retaining ring 5, provided with a wiper 6, are mounted side by side in an axle-box to encircle the axle collar 2 without attachment to the axle-box, the ring 5 being flexibly suspended from the ring 11. The suspension spring is secured to a frame 14 arranged on the ring 11, the frame being made of brass or other bearing metal and arranged to bear against the collar 2 so as to relieve the felt 12 from pressure. Fig. 4 shows a modified form of the dust excluding ring comprising a wooden frame 17 containing a felt ring 12 and a segment 18 of brass or other bearing metal. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following features. (1) The dust-excluding ring shown in Fig. 4 may be used without an oil-retaining ring. (2) The suspension spring shown in Fig. 1 may be arranged to press the ring 5 against the axle bush. (3) The rings may be arranged as shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled) and Fig. 2 (Cancelled), the ring 5 being suspended from a frame 7 having nosepieces 8 engaging the rim of the dust-ring chamber 9 by a flat spring 10 coiled in a double loop, the spring being arranged in such a way that, in addition to giving vertical support to the ring 5, it presses the ring against the bush 4; or a special spring may be provided for this purpose. In a modification, the ring 5 is attached to the frame 7 by two or more spiral springs. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
