Dust, excluding; oil, retaining.- A dust-excluding ring for axle-boxes comprises two sheet-metal discs 1, 2 connected together and provided with felt packing. The discs have overlapping flanged rims 3 and are secured together by tongues 14 on the lower part of the disc 1, which pass through openings 15 in the disc 2 and are secured by a cotter 16, the edge 13 of the upper part of the rim of the disc 2 being bent over as shown. Felt strips 10, 11 are secured on the disc 2 by sewing through holes 9 in the disc, the strip 10 bearing against the axle collar 5 and the strip 11 bearing against the rim of the axle-box. A strip of leather 12 is attached to the side of the strip 10 to prevent fraying of the felt. The disc 1 is provided with an annular segment 4 of bearing metal resting on the axle to prevent crushing of the felt, and carries two flat springs 17 on its outer side which bear against the wall 18 of the axle-box and press the felt 11 against the rim. An oil-retaining ring 20 provided with a wiper 21 is flexibly suspended from the disc 1 by a hook 19 engaging a spring 6 secured to the disc 1. This ring 20 is provided at its bottom with a tongue 22 engaging behind the edges of a recess 23 in the disc 1, which is also cut away at 24 to allow the passage of the hook 19. The disc 2 has a depression 25 into which the hook enters. The spring 6 presses the ring 20 against the axle-bush. The hook 19 and tongue 22 are bent so as to leave a space 26 between the dust ring and the oil ring. Instead of sewing the felt strip 10 on the disc 2,. it may be clamped between the two discs.
