Furnace fronts; liquid-fuel furnaces.-A broad metal ring a, slightly less in diameter than the furnace mouth b, is inserted in the mouth of a steam-boiler furnace, and is caulked from the outside with asbestos or like packing c, in order to effect a tight joint between the furnace mouth and the furnace front, and to protect the rivets b<1>, which secure the boiler front plate to the boiler plates. As shown in Fig. 3, the ring a preferably comprises three segments, connected either by bolts d passing through lugs a<1> which leave a clearance between consecutive segments, or by screws a<3> passing through slots in butt straps a<2>, to allow for expansion, and the inner part of the ring may be enlarged at a<4> to form a stop for the packing, and each segment may be provided with chipping-strips a<5>. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rearwardly extending flange e of the furnace front fits over the projecting end of the ring a, and is held in place by clamps f, but it may be secured by screws passed through its back plate into lugs cast on the ring a, as shown in Fig. 4, or the flange e may be fitted within the ring a, or the furnace front may have a flat back plate attached by screws to lugs on the ring a, and by clamps to the boiler front plate. Fig. 5 shows a ring a formed with a protecting web a<1> carrying a brick ring a<6> for use with an oil-burning front, the space between the front and the web a<1> being closed by a psrforated ring a<7> so that it acts as a heat insulator.
