Flues, internal; tubes, smoke.-The fire-tubes are reduced in circumference and cross-section towards their outlet ends so as either to keep the velocity of gas flow through the tube constant or to increase it. A boiler 10 has two flues 11 running from front to rear and a return flue 13 beneath them of a cross-sectional area at the rear of the boiler equal to the combined areas of the other flues at that end. The return flue may be dispensed with, or more than one provided of such dimensions that there is a continuous reduction in cross sectional area of the flues traversed by the gases in their passage through the boiler. To facilitate insertion in tube plates of a marine type boiler the holes in the plate receiving the outlet ends of the tubes may be equal to or larger than the holes in the other plate, and the outlet ends of the tubes are enlarged to form bell mouths or are provided with an external collar.
