1671. Anderberg, A. Jan. 21. Locomotives, draught induced by motion of; baffles.-In a locomotive boiler furnace, air is supplied through passages in the fire-box bridge or baffle by means of tubes 9 passing through the fire-box plates just below the boiler shell and formed with a trumpet-shaped mouth. A damper 6 operable from the cab automatically or by hand is fitted, and a steam jet may be provided for use when stationary. To prevent leakage due to changes of temperature, the pipe 9 is fitted, with an intervening packing of asbestos &c., within the pipe 1, expanded or otherwise jointed into the fire-box plates, and is secured thereto by rivets 8. The front end of the passage in the bridge is of larger area than that of the pipe 9, but is reduced towards the outlet as shown.
