Superheaters, steam. - The particles of unconsumed fuel which are drawn through the tubes of a locomotive boiler are burnt in the smoke-box, and the heat generated is utilized for superheating the steam. Figs. 1 and 2 show the arrangement. The lower part of the smoke-box is lined with refractory material forming a hearth. The air for the combustion of the small fuel is admitted through a perforated pipe g, protected by a perforated fire-brick covering h. A slide k controls the air supply. Two superheaters f are fitted directly over the hearth.
