Abstract

16,554. Cotton, F. Jan. 18. Steam - generator furnaces; air and steam, supplying; tuyeres. - Lignite, refuse, and other low-grade fuels are burnt in a d e e p mass in a closed bottom shaft furnace, the whole of the air and superheated steam necessary for combustion being supplied under pressure into the body of the fuel, and the resulting gases being led over incandescent surfaces before coming into contact with the boiler. The invention is an improvement on that described in Specification 1233/09. In the arrangement shown the furnace consists of a shaft 1 with a solid hearth 2 and a flared upper portion 18. Air and superheated steam are supplied through a tuyere 15 having a longitudinally flared outlet, and the products of combustion pass over the incandescent upper surface 16 and across the bridge portion 18 to the flue beneath the boiler. The steam for supply to the injector is superheated in a coil in a chamber at the top of the furnace or in the smoke-box. The furnace is fed from above, either mechanically or by hand, and the ashes are withdrawn at intervals. When fitted to a water-tube boiler, the injectors deliver through the furnace front, and the rear wall of the furnace is inclined.
