Abstract
1233. Cotton, F. April 16, 1908, [Convention date]. Steam-generator furnaces; air and steam, supplying.-Lignite, refuse, and other low-grade fuels are burnt in a deep mass in a closed-bottom shaft furnace, the whole of the air and superheated steam necessary for combustion being supplied under pressure into the body of the fuel. As shown applied to a locomotive-type boiler, the furnace consists of a shaft A having a solid hearth B, a feeding-door D, and ash-removing apertures C. Air and superheated steam are supplied through tuyeres (not shown) delivering into the mass of the fuel, and the products of combustion pass through a flue E above the level of the fuel in the shaft to the tubes of the boiler. The steam for supply to the tuyere is superheated in a coil H in a chamber F at the top of the furnace. A baffle U is fitted to prevent direct contact of the furnace gases with the boiler above the water-level. In the case of an externally-fired multitubular boiler, staggered columns of brickwork may be fitted in the flue beneath the boiler. The Specification. in its original form, as open to public inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 16,554/09, for which see the abridgment of that case. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
