Abstract

5819. Stauss, C. W. March 9. Steam-generator &c.furnaces; mechanical stoking. -The firebrick arch G separates the combustion chamber from the gasefication chamber V, into which the fuel is fed from the hopper K. The slanting grate R is suspended from rollers and can be variously inclined by means of the gearing B. The vertical grate S is adjusted so that sufficient air may enter to produce coking of the fuel in the chamber V. The gases so produced pass through the layer of burning fuel on the grate and are completely consumed. The coked fuel passes down on to the grate. Steam tubes, not shown in the Figure, are arranged under the grate for cooling the slag.
