Abstract
183,601. Forsyth, G. H. May 2, 1921. Disc wheels.-The body of the wheel comprises one or more steel discs yieddable in the plane of the wheel and is held under active radial compression by a peripheral member of smaller diameter than the normal diameter of the unstressed disc or discs. In one construction, illustrated in Fig. 2, the periphery 32 of the disc is inclined and formed with a stop flange 33 at its inner edge. The radial compression of the disc is obtained when the rim 37 is forced on to the periphery by a split ring 36 or wedging shims which bear on a shoulder 35 on the disc and are drawn up and held by bolts 38. The disc is deeply dished towards the front of the wheel. In a modification, the disc may be combined with a second dished disc, the two discs being in contact at the periphery but otherwise spaced apart. Fig. 4 shows another arrangement in which two spring steel plates 40, 41 are drawn together at their centres till their outer edges snap under the lipped edges 39a, 39b of a ring 39 with which they are held in engagement by their own resilience supplemented if required by the outward pressure of a central filling-piece consisting of two telescoping rings 45, 46 having screw-threaded engagement with one another.
