Abstract

182,491. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Herr, H. T.). July 2, 1921, [Convention date]. Cooling air, tubular apparatus for; regulating or controlling flow of liquids.-Air is cooled in a heat-interchanger wherein a difference of pressure is maintainable between the air and the cooling fluid, so that in, the event of leakage, the ingress of the cooling fluid into the air circuit is prevented. The cooling fluid is maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure by means of a suction pump located at the discharge end and a regulating valve located at the inlet end of the cooling fluid circuit. The invention is described as applied to the cooling of air circulated around an electric motor 11 driving a ship's propeller, sea water being used as the cooling fluid. The air is circulated by the motor through conduits 12, 13 and around the tubas of a cooler 14. The sea-water inlet 25 at the side 10 of the ship is fitted with a stop valve 26 and a regulating valve 18. The suction pump 17 is located at the discharge end 29 of the circuit, where another stop valve 30 is fitted. A window 31 is provided in the sea-water pipe 28 so that the presence of air bubbles in the water may be observed, and a pressure gauge is fitted. The regulating valve is provided with an adjustable guide-cap 20 for the valve stem, whereby the pressure may be regulated. An arrangement is also described comprising several coolers arranged in parallel between the regulating valve and the suction pump, each cooler being fitted with stop valves so that any one may be put out of action for repair &c. while the others continue working. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 22669/98, [Class 122, Steam engines], 142,454 and 165,484, [Class 32, Distilling &c.]
