Abstract

255,048. B³chi, A. July 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Railway locomotives, internal-combustion engine.-A power plant, particularly for vehicles, consists of an internal-combustion engine 2, one or more compressors 5 and an exhaust driven multi-stage turbine 11. Compressed air from the compressor 5, which is engine-driven, is supplied for normal charging by way of the conduit 7 to the inlet valves 8. Additional air is also supplied by a conduit 37 to a tank, from which it may pass into the engine on either the admission or the exhaust stroke, or directly to the turbine 11 by way of conduits 39, 40. The engine exhaust passes through conduits 10 to the turbine through valve controlled conduits 12, 13, 14. An equalizing vessel or steam generator 36 may be inserted in the conduit system 10. The flow regulating valves 12. 13, 14, 41, 42, 45, 46 are actuated from a common controller 47. At starting, air is drawn from a compressor 31, the compressor 5 and turbine 11 being byepassed by opening valves 33, 34 through the medium of levers and rods 35. Levers 32 control the fuel pump 30. The additional air may be compressed behind the engine piston and delivered to the engine cylinder on the exhaust stroke. In a modification in which the additional air enters the engine cylinder on the admission stroke, the compressor 5 supplies both the charging and the additional air by way of the conduit 7, and a doubly-seated valve is situated in the exhaust passage. Ahead and astern turbines may be driven by the exhaust gases. Both charging and additional air may be cooled before entering the engine cylin. der or the turbine casing. According to the Specification as open to in. spection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), external power is delivered only by an exhaust-driven motor. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
