Abstract

344,735. Power plant for ships. SULZER FR’RES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. June 4, 1930, No. 17081. Convention date, June 14, 1929. [Classes 113 (i) and 114.] An aircraft carrier or other ship propelled by internal combustion engines which exhaust under water are arranged with the outlet nozzle wholly or partially surrounded by a second nozzle through which water is discharged under pressure. The engines 7, 8 and 9, 10 have exhaust trunks 11, 21 passing by a conduit 19 and branches 12, 16 to above water silencers 13, 17 and thence by an inner down pipe 28 to nozzles 14, 18. Surrounding the silencers are second nozzles 29 through which water is passed, preferably the water being that employed for cooling the engine. The upper part of the silencer may be fitted with a suction valve for admitting air in cases where outside water might be drawn up into the silencer. A relief valve may also be fitted in the event of an excessive pressure occurring in the silencer. The ventilating air for the engine-room is drawn through louvres 26 and is passed over the exhaust pipes with a view to cooling them. The outlet pipes 12 and 16 are sufficiently large to take the whole of the exhaust should passage to one of the silencers be unfavourable when the ship is in a heavy sea way.
