Abstract

568,249. Exhaust silencers. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., and WHEELER, W. A. Nov. 26, 1943, No. 19769. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A silencer for a marine engine, adapted to discharge under water, is provided with a buoyant valve 3 which rests upon a seating 4 and permits a free passage of the exhaust gases around it when the engine is working, but which floats upwards to a seating 5 and closes the exhaust passage 1 against ingress of water when the engine stops. The silencer is formed in two parts 1, 2, each providing a valve seat and the lower part terminates in a deflector nozzle 8 formed between the bottom 7 of the boat and a plate 9 extending thereacross at or near a transom 10.
