Abstract

263,506. Martin, W. H. July 6, 1925. Air and gases, treating with liquids. - In a silencer or spark arrester for internal-combustion engines, air or gas compressors, &c. the gases act ejectorwise to put liquid in motion between guiding surfaces 8, and the discharge orifice for the gases is automatically adjusted by a valve 1, as described in Specification 8243/11, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of]. The valve is controlled by one or more springs 5 arranged to compensate the weight of the valve and adjustable by means such as a nut 6 to regulate the back pressure to a minimum approximating to the head of liquid above the valve. The surfaces 8 are arranged below an elbow 9 depending into an open tank, the valve opening downwards, and the elbow may have a water jacket 10. For use on board ship, the tank may have raised sides 17, the ends 18 sloping upwards from their centres, in order that rolling of the ship may not effect the head of water materially, the tank being fed from the water jacket 10 and overflow from the ends 18 taking place through an outer casing 13 and pipe 15. In modifications, the valve stem and spring are below the valve, and overflow takes place through stand pipes connected to a common outlet pipe.
