Abstract
665.526. Engine cooling systems. FELL DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., FELL, L. F. R., and COUSINS, R. J. W. Aug. 25, 1949, No. 22103/49. Class 64(iii) In a cooling system for a vehicle driven by two engines or groups of engines M 1 , M 2 , Fig. 1, and cooled by two radiators R 1 , R 2 , the coolant is caused to circulate in three circuits, viz., a circuit through the radiator R, and the engines M,; a circuit through the other radiator R 2 and the other engines M 2 ; and thirdly a circuit running from the bottom of the radiator R 1 through the engines M 2 to the top of the radiator R 2 , through that radiator to the engines M, thence to the top of the radiator R,. Pumps P 1 , P 2 and P 12 maintain the circulation and non-return valves N 1 , N 2 prevent shortcircuiting. A header tank T is connected through a pipe 11 to the lowest part of the system and keeps the system full of coolant. The tank T is vented to atmosphere at V and the radiator R 1 , R 2 are vented to the tank T by pipes 9 and 10. In a further form, Fig. 2 (not shown, auxiliary engines are provided for supercharging the main engines and for driving the pumps. These auxiliary engines and also any necessary oil coolers are connected into the third circuit of the system. In this form two header tanks are provided, the vent pipe of each tank being under the control of a float valve which operates to prevent, except at excessive pressure, liquid flowing from one tank to another due to the pressure difference which arise from variations in the speeds of the respective pumps associated with each group of engines. Specification 628,448, [Group XXVI], is referred to.
