Abstract
1295767 Cooling I.C. engine, treating charge CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 17 March 1970 [25 March 1969] 12743/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division F4] A dual cooling system for an I. C. engine 13 and the supercharged air from a turbo-charger 31 comprises a first closed circuit having a radiator 11, pump 14, heat exchanger 17 and a thermostatic valve 23 and a second closed circuit having a radiator 25, pump 27, heat exchanger 29 and a thermostatic valve 34. The valves 23, 34 are positioned in the conduits 24, 35 leading from the respective heat exchangers to prevent coolant flow to the radiators below a predetermined temperature, the coolant passing to the pump inlets 15, 26 respectively. In a modification, the second circuit includes an additional heat exchanger for cooling the working fluid of a hydrodynamic retarder which is inactivated when the turbo-charger is operative. A single supply and expansion tank is operatively connected to both circuits, which tank is divided into separate and heat isolated compartments.
