Abstract

717,478. Cooling systems for internalcombustion engines. SICKINGER, H., [trading as MECANO SPEZIALARTIKEL FUR KRAFTFAHRZEUGE.]. Dec. 5, 1952, No. 30903/52. Class 64(3) In a closed liquid coolant circulating system for an internal-combustion engine E in which hot coolant circulates from the engine through a pipe 3 leading to a radiator 2 in which it is cooled and from which it flows through a further pipe 4 incorporating a pump 6 and back to the engine, a thermostatic valve 10 is provided in the outflow pipe from the engine and a by-pass pipe 7 permanently interconnects the suction and pressure sides of the pump in such a way that if the thermostatic valve is closed the pump operates via the by-pass pipe 7 in a closed circuit. The system operates as follows: On starting, when the coolant is cold, the thermostatic valve 10 remains closed so that no circulation can take place through the radiator 2. The coolant then circulates only within the engine block, e.g. by thermosyphon action. At the same time, owing to the pressure maintained by the pump which is constantly circulating water through the by-pass, causing also a reduction in pressure in the pipe 3, undesired opening of the thermostatic valve against its thermal bias is prevented. As the temperature in the engine block rises the thermostatic valve 10 is caused to open and so allows a small and gradually increasing flow through the radiator. The angles at which the two ends of the bypass pipe 7 enter the main flow pipe 4 are such that an ejector action is exerted on these openings and therefore as more coolant is allowed to flow through the pipes 3 and 4 and the radiator 2 so progressively less coolant is circulated through the by-pass 7.
