968,073. Cooling systems for I.C. engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Aug. 20, 1963 [Aug. 30, 1962], No. 32959/63. Heading F4U. Apparatus for regulating coolant circulation in an I.C. engine having a thermostaticallycontrolled radiator by-pass comprises independent thermostatic regulating stages operative for progressively opening passages for coolant circulation at different coolant temperatures, at least one stage responsive at a lower temperature controlling a smaller passage cross-section than at least one stage responsive at a higher temperature. In the form shown, water is circulated between an engine 1 and a radiator 2 by a pump 7. At low coolant temperatures the radiator is bypassed by coolant flow through a pipe 8. When the temperature reaches a preset value, e.g. 75‹ C., a valve 12 controlled by a bellows 11 opens to allow a small flow of water from the engine outlet pipe 5 into the radiator through an opening 14 and the pipes 15 and 5<SP>1</SP>, the cross-sections at 14 and 15 being about 25% of that of the pipe 5<SP>1</SP>. At a higher temperature, e.g. 80‹ C., a bellows 9 actuates a double valve 10 to close off the by-pass 8 and open a passage having a cross-section of about 75% that of the pipe 5<SP>1</SP>, so that all of the water flows from the engine into the radiator. The flow of cold coolant into the engine is thus increased by stages. In cold weather only the narrower passage may be used.
