Abstract
590,573. Cooling systems for engines. BAY, T. J. Dec. 28, 1944, No. 26013. [Class 64 (iii)] A cooling system to maintain a constant operating temperature for an internal combustion engine 10, comprises two heat exchangers 11 and 12 of which the former is bye-passed by the pipe 26. - In the example specified in which the engine is. in a ship, sea water passes through the heat exchange element 13 in the cooler 11 to cool the engine jacket water in the element 17, and this water itself cools the oil passing through the element 23 in the exchanger 12. The temperature of the jacket water leaving the engine 10 is maintained constant by the temperature control valve 19 which is actuated by the control element 27 to allow water to byepass the heat exchanger 11, and hence the temperature of the oil is likewise kept at a steady value. On starting the engine, the jacket water byepasses the heat exchanger 11 to heat the oil more quickly, and an orifice 34, which is of fixed dimensions, allows hot jacket water to byepass both heat exchangers, so that the oil may be cooled to a temperature below that of the jacket water entering the engine.
