Abstract
551,469. Lubricating systems. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and COWDRY, C. L. Aug. 20, 1941, No. 10591. [Class 12 (iii)] Lubricating-oil for engines is cooled by passing through a heat-exchanger which receives from an auxiliary radiator separately cooled liquid from a main air-cooled radiator, such as the liquid used to cool the engine, a valve controlled by the temperature of the oil determining the flow to the heat exchanger. In one example, Fig. 1, the engine A is cooled by water circulating through pipe B<SP>1</SP>, tank B, pipe B<SP>2</SP>, a pump, pipe B<SP>3</SP>, main radiator C and return pipe D. An auxiliary radiator C' delivers water to pipe H to mingle with water in pipe E from engine A through a thermostatic valve F to the heat-exchanger G and thence by pipe E<SP>1</SP>, a pump, and pipe B<SP>3</SP> to the radiators C, C<SP>1</SP>. The heat-exchanger G is placed in an oil tank forming a circulating chamber, the oil passing through a centrifugal de-aerator before reaching exchanger G. The cooling of the radiators C, C' is controlled by a flap M. Modifications are described. Specification 550,326, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
