Abstract

1,033,181. Air-cooling heat exchangers. KLOCKNER - HUMBOLDT - DEUTZ A.G. Jan. 2, 1963 [Jan. 11, 1962], No. 239/63. Heading F4S. [Also in Division F1] A device shown, for cooling supercharged air as it flows into an I.C. engine (not shown) is bolted to the engine by flanges 14 on its supercharging-air outlet manifold 15, and consists of a row of cross-flow heat exchange units 7 (see Fig. 1, not shown) in which the supercharging air is cooled either by air from a blower 12 flowing through the units by way of inlet and outlet ducts 10, 11, or by water passing through the units by way of header boxes 13 (Fig. 5, not shown), bolted to the units 7 in place of the ducts 10, 11. The supercharged air may make a plurality of passes of successively reducing cross-sectional area through the units 7 before reaching the outlet manifold 15 leading to the engine. When ambient air is used as the coolant it may, after passing through the superchargedair cooler, be used directly to cool the engine if the latter is air cooled, or as a coolant for the engine radiator when the engine is water cooled.
