Vacuum tubes.-A heated cathode and a cold anode are enclosed in an air or gas-filled chamber, two grids being located between the electrodes. The grids may be of different materials or maintained at different temperatures. They may be formed as entwined spirals, and they may have their plane disposed parallel to or transverse to the ionic stream. Other types of valve are described in which (1) one or both electrodes are heated, (2) one or both electrodes are of an alkali metal, (3) a potassium cathode is used, and (4) four grids are inserted between the anode and cathode.
