Abstract
179,167. Morse Instrument Co. Inc., (Assignees of Morse, R. V.). May 2, 1921, [Convention date]. Fuse-setting devices combined with parts of guns.- Relates to apparatus for automatically setting the time fuses of projectiles as they are fed through an automatic gun, of the kind, comprising a plunger mechanism 13 which, after firmly gripping the shell 12 and its fuse ring 14, is automatically rotated by a spindle 22 to set the fuse ring. The spindle 22 is integral with the element 17 of a dog-clutch the counter part 27 of which is slidable against the action of a spring 24 on the plunger 13. When the link 34 is moved to the right by a recoil-operated lever 62, the plunger 13 is moved to the right by the pressure of a spring 35 on a lever 30 and the shell and fuse ring are gripped. Also, the pressure of a spring 39 is applied to a lever 45 which acts upon a pin 48 to turn an epicyclic gear 49 - - 51 by an amount determined by an adjustable stop 21, only after the sleeve 27 has been moved by the lever 30 to disengage the dog-clutch. The stop 21 is carried by a ring 54 which can be adjusted by turning a wheel 56 during the working of the gun. The movements of the lever 45 are limited by adjustable stops 58, 59. The fuse setting is preferably effected during counter recoil, the rod 34 being moved to the left during recoil to release the shell and return the lever.45 to normal position.
