Abstract
178,836. Perrot, H. April 22, 1921, [Convention date]. Pistons, balancing laterally. - An aluminium or other piston for an internal-combustion engine is formed with flaps a, b which fit the cylinder when cold, while the intermediate portions of the skirt and the head d are of reduced diameter. In the manufacture of the piston the skirt is turned to fit the cylinder, while the head d is turned to a slightly smaller diameter. Two cuts 1 are made from the edge of the skirt to a point near the piston head, and two cuts 3 are made from the ends of a transverse cut near the piston head to a point near the edge of the skirt, thus forming flaps a, b opposite the gudgeon. The flaps are then drawn inwards by a rod threaded into bosses on the flaps, and the piston is mounted on an axis which is oblique in the plane of the gudgeon pin and turned to a diameter slightly less than the bore of the cylinder, the flaps being finally released.
