Abstract

176,153. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Dec. 7, 1920. Ceiling and like overhead lamps; lantern doors and door fittings.-A lighting fixture comprises a canopy enclosing an electric lamp socket, an envelope for the lamp slidably supported on the canopy and having an aperture in its lower surface sufficiently large to provide clearance for a lamp and means for closing the aperture. In one form, a glass envelope 31, having a clear upper surface and enamelled sides and lower sur. face, is supported by a ring member 28, having a series of fingers 29, which are sprung over the end 30 of the envelope, and a flared end 27 of a canopy 26, which is screwed into an internallythreaded portion 25 of a cap 17. A flexible cord 11 containing electric wires is secured to the cap 17 by a clamp 21 and a rubber gasket 19 and to a ceiling plate 10 by clamps 12, 13 and a rubber gasket 14. A metal cap 24 of a lamp socket 23 is screwed to a nipple 22 which is screwed into the cap 17. An aperture 32 in the envelope is covered by a conical plate 34 held in place by a spring clip 35, the opposite ends of which rest on the edge of the envelope. By withdrawing the head 39 of a bolt 37, which passes through the tip of the conical plate 34 and engages a nut 36 attached to the centre of the clip 35, the latter sliding on projections 40, is drawn down into the plate and disengaged from the envelope. In a second form, the metal cap of the lamp socket is provided with three radial projections for engaging recessed slots in the upper end of the canopy. A spring, which bears against a cover cap carried on a screw-threaded extension of the socket cap and against a washer resting on the canopy, tends to retain the projections in engagement with the slots. The screw-threaded extension of the cap may be attached to a supporting ring or to the conduit.
