Abstract

172,308. Skywing Aircraft Corporation, (Assignees of Harper, W.). Dec. 1, 1920, [Convention date]. Regulating; valves; valve-gear.-The invention relates to engines having radial cylinders secured to a central rotating shaft in the interior of which is located a distributing-valve, the engine pistons being connected to eccentrics on the central shaft by return rods. According to the invention, which is shown applied to a valve of the kind described in Specification 180,681, means are provided for adjusting the timing of the valve to vary the speed and power. The engine shown in Fig. 1 has radial cylinders which rotate with a shaft 5 about a central rotating valve 21, the pistons being connected by outside rods 11 to rings 13 mounted upon eccentric sheaves 18. Each cylinder has an elongated port 7 opening into a similar port 8 in the sleeve 5, the ports 8 registering at intervals with separate admission, exhaust, and ignition ports in the valve as described in the Specification referred to above. Secured to one end of the valve is a wheel 25 which gears with a pinion 26 mounted on a spindle 27 carrying a second pinion geared to the wheel 30 on the shaft 5. The spindle 27 is carried by a swinging arm 28 the position of which may be adjusted to vary the angular position of the valve to alter the timing.
