Abstract
172,173. Wallace, G. W. Sept. 30, 1920. Coking processes. - In a process for distilling carbonaceous material by subjecting a continuous body of the material to heat in a closed chamber in such a manner that the material becomes coked progressively, the evolved gases and vapours are withdrawn through unobstructed passageways in the barrier of solidifying material in the coking- zone which is at a temperature of from 650‹ to 750‹ F. The apparatus comprises an externally heated retort A having a central gas-outlet duct C in which are screwed radially-disposed slotted ducts E projecting through the coking zone X and the thin barrier Y of solidifying material that separates the molten mass from the already formed coke Z, whereby the gases generated are withdrawn without disrupting the barrier Y. A flange 3 on the duct C supports the coke which is withdrawn upwards through the retort and the ducts E serve to hold the coked residue to the duct C while the mass is conveyed away. Specification 129,997 is referred to.
