Coking processes; retorts, methods of working. - Carbonaceous materials are fractionally distilled by increasing the temperature of the retort gradatim, and introducing an inert carrying-gas, which, at all stages of the distillation, is preheated to the temperature of the material at the point of contact of the gas and material. The heating of the gas to the requisite temperature may be effected by supplying it through a pipe passing through the material in the retort, and its diffusion may be promoted by providing perforated pipes radiating from the bottom of the inlet pipe. The gases leaving the retort are passed to a condenser, and the uncondensed gases may be returned to the retort.
