ATTORNEY @atente de @9 lg3d APPARATUS AND PROGESS SFOR tIJDUCINGi 151i l r lr:: t: @WENS application mea maya Our invention relates to an apparatus and process tor producing water gas in vertical chamber coke ovens and more particularly to a means for regulating the cokng time and for supplying steam to the ltop of the charge, enriching it if desired with oil or heavy hydrocarbons and drawing H the water gasat the bottom of the oven thru a i walls narrowing panded.

lt will be understood that in order to more readily discharge the coke from verti-` cal chamber and retort ovens, at their. bottoms, these have been built tapering, with toward the top and widening downwardly. The consequence is, that the coal inthe upper part will coke more rapidly than the coal in the lower part. ln order to achieve a uniform coking in theentire height of the oven, it was necessary to decrease the amount ness of the coal charge.
ln producing Water gas in suchchamber or retort ovens, the steam was supplied from the bottom; the operator waiting to feed the gas until the whole coke charge had eX- According to our invention, one increases in a given time the amount of coal that is charged and coked and the amount of productlon of gas in vertical chamber coke ovens by heating the upperpart of the oven just as much as the Vlower part is heated.y This heat-in of the coking chamber is accomplished y any suitable means. Turnin which the figure illustrates a vertical .section of a vertical chambered coke oven, a -recuperator system is illustrated in which strong rich gas is supplied through pipes M to heating iues N, to which preheated air for combustionv is supplied, the burning gases passing. alongside of the outside of the coking chamber and returning for discharge into ues O. By this meansthe upper part ofthe charge becomes coked and expands some hours earlier than the lower part. Distillation gases then pass upwardly and out through pipe A, valvel C and'main AD. In'order to prevent a superheating of the upper part, of

steam from pipe B, is'supplied to the standpipe A, after coking the upper part of the charge, the valve C, to thevcollector gas main l), having been closed, thus cutting ed the discharge of the distillation gases. The steam which enters the lcoke chamber E, produces water gas romcontact with the expanded cohe in the upper part of the chamber. This'water gas then passes tov the lower part et the chamber which has not yet been completely coked and because of the sensible amount of heat which it carries, helps in 'the coking operation.
The water gas which has been produced is discharged at the lower end of 'fthe coke chamber or retort, with the distillation gas,
which is still being produced, into the pipe which is provided with a shut-0H valve 'ln order to make easy the discharge of the gas through the entire horizontalwidth of the coking chamber, it is preferred to ll the lower part of the chamber with pieces of pokey H, before hlling the chamber with coa ln order to produce gas of high caloriiic value, one can supply oi or tar in the u per part of the chamber through pipe B, ii) desired with or without the steam, which will produce a carburetting of the water gas which is formedin thev oven, when steam' `Having thus described the invention, vits operation will-tbe clear.l .It will be understood vthat changes may bemade in carrying the invention into efect withoutl departing from the principle thereof.
What we claim is:
l. The. process of producing coke and water gasin vertical chamber coke ovens, which consistsv in coking the upper portion of the coal in the chamber of the oven, feeding steam to the top of the chamber after the ending ofthe coking of the coal inthe upper part of the chamber and before ending of the coking in the lower part of the chamber, and inA drawing o the water gas so produced, at the bottom of the chamber,
produced. l
2. The process of producing coke and water gas in vertical chamber coke ovens with downwardly widening coking chambers, which consists in coking the upper portion of the coal in the chamber of the oven, eeding steam to the top of the chamber after the ending of the coking of the coal in the upper part of the chamber and before ending of the coking in the lower part of the chamber, supplying heavy hydrocarbons into the chamber at the top in order to carburet the water gas thus formed, and in drawing off the water gas so produced, at the bottom of the chamber.
3. The process of producing coke and water gas in vertical chamber coke ovens with downwardly widening coking chambers, which consists in coking the upper portion of the coal in the chamber of the oven, feeding steam to the top of the chamber after the ending of the coking of the coal in the upper part of the chamber and before ending of the cokingin the lower part of the chamber, supplying oil into the chamber at the top in order to carburet the water gas thus formed, and in drawing ofi" the water gas so produced at the bottom of the charn-k 4. An apparatus for producing coke and water gas in vertical chamber coke ovensJ comprising in combination, a verticall elongated oven chamber having downward5I ly widening walls, and adapted to discharge coke through the bottom, means for heating the outside of the oven chamber so aseto coke the upper portion of the coal, means for discharging distillation gases from the top of the chamber, means for feeding steam to the upper part of the chamber, and means i11- cluding a pipe for drawing oif the Water gas ipe produced, from the bottom of the cham- 5. An apparatus for producing coke and water gas in vertical chamber coke ovens comprising in combination, a vertically elongated oven chamber having downwardly widening walls and adapted to discharge thru the bottom; means for heating the outside of the oven chamber so as to coke the upper portion of the coal, means for discharging distallation gases from the top of the chamber, means for cutting olf said discharge of the distillation gases, means for feeding steam to the upper part of the chamber, and means for drawing ofi the Water gas and distillation gases from the bottom of the chamber.
In witness whereof, we have signed our names to this specification. CARL TTCL CHARLES W. ANDRElVS.,
