Abstract

Lateral-splash guards for the wheels of road vehicles comprise a flexible mesh or like sheet guard 8 suspended within the slot 7 of a frame 6 which, on meeting an obstruction, is capable of lateral inward movement towards the wheel, such movement causing the guard to be raised in the slot. The frame is suspended from the wheel centre by spring-fitted sliding rods 5 passing through lugs 4 of a part mounted by ball bearings upon the hub dust cap or a central stud secured thereto, the rods having a knee joint 13 to permit of the lower portions moving inwards towards the wheel. The upper member 5 of each knee joint has an inwardly projecting arm, and this arm is slotted for the connection of a link 17 having a similar connection 11<a> to the inner end of a lever 11, which is pivoted to an adjustable sleeve 12 and to lugs 10 on an upper bar 9 of the guard 8. Hooks 26 or a bar or thick fringe may be provided to prevent the guard from being raised above the frame, and a single spring 22, or a pair of such springs, connected to a part such as the ordinary mud-guard, may be fitted to prevent undue swinging of the device about the wheel centre. The guard may be fitted with light flat springs 24 the central one of which may bear upon a roller 25 carried by the inner bar 6a of the frame. The central supporting-stud may be screwed into the hub dust cap, or it may be formed on a split bush adapted to be gripped' upon the dust cap by a pair of exterior nuts.
