Abstract

310,781. Armstrong, J. D. Heaton-. Jan. 30, 1928. Mudguards of the close-fitting type designed for the steering-wheels of motor-cars &c. and adapted to turn therewith are pivotally supported from the non-steering part of the vehicle. The mudguard a, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with a bracket b formed with a tubular lug b<1>, which is pivoted by ball or other bearings on a bolt c arranged approximately co-axially with the stub axle pin and carried by a resilient bracket d secured at the other end to the non-steering part of the front axle. Alternatively the pivot c may be supported from an extension of the stub axle pin, or on a bracket, secured to the sprung part of the chassis. In order to effect the turning of the mudguard with the steering movements of the wheel, links f<1> are pivoted at f to the guard a and carry pivoted eye-bolts f<2>, to which are secured arms g, the other ends of which are pivoted at j on either side of the upper end of an arm m secured by a bolt n to a lug o on the steering portion of the stub axle. No appreciable part of the weight of the mudguard is supported by the control arms g. Friction devices are provided at the pivot points to damp out vibration.
