Abstract
603,831. Vehicle spring-suspensions. JAGUAR CARS, Ltd., and HEYNES, W. M. Nov. 17, 1945, No. 30920. [Class 108 (ii)] In a vehicle having independently sprung steering wheels, each wheel is rotatably journalled in a hollow of a steerable support connected to the chassis frame by means of upper and lower links, ball joint connections being provided between the hollow support and the links. As shown in Fig. 1, pivoted to the chassis frame 12 at 19 and 14 are lower and upper wishbone supports 17 and 15, the lower wishbone being also connected to the frame through a vibration damper 16. Pivoted to the outer ends of the wishbones by ball joints 42, 38 is the wheel hub support 27 having an opening 41 which embraces the ball joint 42, see also Fig. 4 and Fig. 2, which is a lateral view of the assembly with wheel, brake gear and hub removed. The hub 25 is rotatably mounted in bearings in the support 27 and is secured by bolts in the holes 30. The wheel 20, 21 and brake drum 23 are secured to the outer flanged end of the wheel hub 25 by screws 24 and nuts 22. The support 27 has a steering arm 50, Fig. 2, which may be actuated by rack-and-pinion steering gear 51. The wheel assembly may be sprung by a leaf spring, which may be transverse and take the place of one of the wishbone arms, or the lower arm 17 may be secured at 19 to one end of a longitudinally disposed torsion rod 18, as described in Specification 598,002. The pivot 14 for the upper arm 15 may be adjustable to vary the castor angle and angle of camber, as described in Specification 603,199.
