280,601. Pollaert, L. H. Nov. 12, 1926, [Convention date]. Lateral-splash guards.- Relates to a lateralsplash guard which is hinged to the downwardly directed arm or arms of one or more two-armed levers pivoted on a supporting member at the side of a vehicle wheel, and consists in the provision, on the upwardly directed arm or arms of the lever or levers, of a weight which nearly counterbalances the weight of the guard. The guard is thus moved easily when striking an obstacle but returns to its effective position. The guard 3 is suspended by links 2<1> from the lower ends of twoarmed levers 2 pivoted at 9 to the ends of a support 1 rotatably mounted on the wheel-hub 5 or fixed to the non-rotating stub-axle in the case of rear and front wheels respectively. The counterweight 4 is pivoted to the upper ends of the levers 2 the normal position of the parts being shown in broken lines. To prevent swinging of the guard under normal conditions, a spring blade 10 secured to and depending from the weight 4 is formed with an eye at its lower end engaging a hemispherical projection on the support 1. The guard, when not required for use, may be folded up above the pivoted connection between the levers 2 and links 2<1> and secured in this position.
