Abstract

3098. Emery, T. Feb. 6. Lateral-splash guards for motor-vehicles comprise a member a pivotally carried by a jointed structure comprising vertical links e detachably suspended at e<1> from horizontal arms d pivoted to an horizontal frame c. The guard is adjustable in height by means of cams g which act upon the arms d. The frame c is pivotally supported by a spider b<2> attached to the wheel spokes or by a member attached to the chassis, and is further held in position by a spring rod b<1>, attached to the chassis. The detachable pivotal attachment at e<1> is constructed as follows. The link c is formed with a slot e<2>, Fig. 4, having a narrow opening e<3>, and the forked end of the arm d carries a pin d<3>, Fig. 3, with an enlarged head d<2>. The pin is pressed inwards against the action of spring d<4> to allow the neck e<3> of the slot e<2> to pass over the narrow end of the pin d<3>, after which the enlarged head of the pin is allowed to engage the slot e<2> to maintain the pivotal attachment. Means such as a Bowden-wire mechanism may be provided to raise the arms d and the guard when the vehicle approaches a curb.
