Abstract

1852. Willcox, S. R. Jan. 25. Mud-guards or lateral mud-shields for motorvehicles are shaped to extend along both sides of the lower portion of the wheel and around one or both ends. The guard A is supported by a rearwardly-extending arm B, which may be rigidly fixed to the axle and to the guard, or, as shown in Fig. 1, may be secured by spring- controlled pivots to these parts. A pendent arm E, wherewith the guard has sliding connexion, may be provided upon the outer side of the wheel. When the guard is movably supported, it may be connected to a lever F by means of which the driver may raise it above the working position. The arm B may be left permanently on the vehicle, the guard being readily detachable by withdrawing the pin B<2> and removing the arm E from the stud upon which it is carried. For a steering-wheel, the arm B may be secured to the pivoted member carrying the stud axle, and where the guard is short the pendent arm may be dispensed with. Either arm may be adjustable lengthways. According to the Provisional Specification, the arm B may have a spring-controlled universal joint.
