Abstract

15,864. Colbery, C. T., and Taylor, C. A. July 9. Wheel - guards and obstruction - removers. - Wheel guards are pivoted under spring control so as to descend to the ground when struck by an obstacle, and, in the case of motor-vehicle front wheels, are mounted so as to move with the wheels during steering-movements; and a spring-controlled cross guard is jointed to the wheel guards. As shown in Figs. I and III, the wheel guards 9 are carried by frames 5, each pivoted at 14 to a block 2, clipped to a steering- arm 1, and normally held raised by a spring 10. The block 2 has faces which limit the pivotal movement of the guard. At the lower part of each guard is a tongue 11, either hinged at 13 and pressed down by a spring 12, or resiliently connected to the guard, and adapted to contact with the ground when the guard is lowered. Or the guards may be supported, as shown in Fig. V, by arms 29 connected to rings 28 encircling bosses 27 secured to the axles. An extension 30 of one ring 28 is connected to the steering-arm 1 by springs 10 or 10<1>, to hold the guard raised, or a spring 10<11> may be connected between an arm 29 and a forwardly-projecting steering-arm when such is used. Ratchet teeth and a pawl may be arranged to hold the guards down after they have been lowered by an obstacle. One side of the guard may be removable, in order that, when a spare wheel is used, the guard may be widened by the connexion of a special side piece. The cross guard 16 is adapted to rock about an axis 17 when struck. It is held raised by a spring 22. The joints connecting the axis 17 to the wheel guards may comprise a U-shaped bracket 37 fixed to the wheel guard, in which a ball 23 is pivoted about a vertical axis. The ball receives the end 24 of the axis 17, and a spring 25 is provided in the bore to allow for vibration.
