Abstract

166,976. Thompson, R. D. April 26, 1920. Ball-and-socket joints; swivelling joints.-In a flexible joint for connecting vacuum brake and other pipes, a flexible diaphragm is used with its edges clamped securely in fluid-tight contact with the two lengths of pipe, and means are provided for avoiding excessive deformation of or strain on the diaphragm. This means may comprise a ball-and-socket arrangement in which the ball is divided into two portions C, D, Fig. 1, between which the diaphragm E is held, the outer edge of such diaphragm being clamped between two half-socket members A, B. The socket parts and the ball parts are connected together by screw-threads. Two such joints or a double joint of a similar construction, Fig. 3, may be used.
