Clutches, friction.-Multiple-disc clutches for use in ships &c.,in which one set of plates 2, splined to a shaft 1, carries blocks 4 of lignum vitµ or other wood, are arranged in a casing 9 through which cooling- water, such as sea-water, is circulated by way of the inlet 10 and outlet 11. whereby the coefficient of friction of the blocks is rendered independent of the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere and also of the presence of lubricating-oil. A co-operating set of metal plates 5 is splined to a drum 6 integral with a shaft 12. The clutch is disengaged by a lever 8, and is held in engagement by a spring 7 or by pressure of a lever or otherwise. The casing may be provided with stuffing-boxes. Motion may be transmitted to two driven shafts, one running in a bore of the other. by means of two clutches contained in the casing.
